Dating from the end of the eight century, this extraordinarily beautiful illuminated Latin manuscript of the four Gospels is now kept in the Library of Trinity College, Dublin. it may have been wholly written by monks on the western Scottish Islands of Iona and brought to Kells, Co. Meath, Ireland to escape Viking raiders, where it was finished. It was stolen in 1006, stipped of its gold cover, which was probably inlaid with precious stones and thrown into a ditch. The outer leaves and margins of the vellum ( a form of calf skin) pages, were damaged by water before it was found some time afterwards. The book was then kept in Kells until 1654 when it was moved to Trinity College, for safe keeping. Later in the 19th century, some of these damaged pages were over trimmed during rebinding.
